Coronavirus: Bus information and advice

Updated: 1pm Thursday 2 July

Help keep yourself and everyone safe when you’re outside the home by thinking about how and when you travel and following safety guidance.

Consider all other travel options before using public transport, including cycling and walking.

Plan ahead, allow extra time for your journeys and be patient when travelling.

If you are travelling, avoid the busiest times and routes.

On public transport, you must wear a face covering unless you are exempt. Keep your distance from others, clean your hands frequently and use contactless payment.

Full buses will operate on a one-off, one-on basis, so please be patient and consider other passengers who may need to travel more urgently than you.

Please check the timetables below before you travel on public transport. The latest bus timetable information can be found here.

Wherever possible, you should pay with contactless, or buy your tickets in advance through their app. You can pay with your contactless bank or credit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay on any of our buses - now up to a limit of £45.

To help you with this change, they'll be reducing the price of 1 Day tickets from £5.20 to £5, and the South Manchester 1 Day ticket will reduce to £4. This means that all of the adult tickets available to buy on board will be rounded to the nearest pound or 50p.

While they'll still be accepting cash, you'll need the correct money. If you don't have the right money, Go North West will donate any surplus received directly to the Greater Manchester Mayor's Charity to assist with funding for homelessness through the coronavirus crisis.

The service will operate Monday to Friday between 8am and 7pm.

  • It will be a kerb to kerb service with no assistance provided to passengers from the drivers when boarding or alighting the vehicle. You must therefore be able to board and alight the vehicle and secure your seat belt without assistance. This is to ensure that social distancing can take place.
  • There will be no access to the tail lift for wheelchairs/mobility aids due to social distancing – any passengers requiring tail lift facilities will be offered a taxi journey. If we do not have an accessible taxi operator then passengers will be advised to book their own taxi and to send the receipt to the above address for reimbursement of the fare paid.
  • Social distancing of 2 metres must be adhered to at all times as appropriate.
  • A maximum of two passengers will be allowed on the vehicle at any one time (three if two are living at the same address).
  • The use of shopping trolleys is discouraged but if it is essential that you use one arrangements can be made to accommodate them at the rear of the vehicle.
  • Drivers will wear face masks and gloves at all times.
  • Vehicles will be cleaned and all seats steam cleaned before the service resumes.
  • Vehicles will be wiped down after the last passenger on each trip has alighted

The contact centre will also reopen on Monday 18 May. Staff will be available from Monday to Friday, between 8am and 4pm.

Fares will be charged as follows on a temporary basis and no tickets will be issued to reduce contact between drivers and passengers. A receptacle will be provided to place fares in to reduce handling cash.

The above restrictions have been put in place to ensure that we can enable necessary travel while protecting drivers and customers. We recognise that this is not the service you are used to but we hope to resume normal service as soon as the restrictions are lifted and when it is safe to do so.

Local Link

Stay at home as much as possible.

Only travel if necessary – work from home and stay local if you can.

Protect public transport for those with no alternative – do not use it unless you have to.

If you do need to use public transport, Local Link bus services are still running but with limited available spaces due to the buses running with a lower maximum capacity.

Please note, while we are trying to spread passengers across all available vehicles there may be occasions where you have to share the vehicle with others, especially on busy work services.

If you use public transport, you must provide and wear a face covering, unless you are exempt. It will be your responsibility to provide this, and it can be a simple scarf or bandana. Exemptions include children under the age of 11 and anyone with a disability or condition which means they are unable to wear one.

Please call 0161 244 1000 for further advice about your Local Link journey.
