How and when you travel

  • See below for specific district based travel advice and tips ⬇️
  • Help keep yourself and everyone safe when you’re outside the home by thinking about how and when you travel and following safety guidance.
  • You can continue to travel within Greater Manchester, but you should aim to reduce the number of journeys you make.
  • You should not travel out of or into the area unless your journey is essential for work, education, medical reasons, to access youth services, for caring responsibilities, or as part of a longer journey.
  • You can use public transport, but space is limited due to social distancing.
  • Please cycle or walk if you can.
  • You should work from home if possible.
  • Plan ahead, allow extra time for your journey, and consider travelling outside the busy morning and afternoon peak times, and using quieter routes. You can check the best times to travel in your local area below.
  • Download the NHS COVID-19 app before you travel, if possible, and check in where you see official NHS COVID-19 QR code posters.

Travelling safely

If you use public transport:

  • You must wear a face covering, including at transport hubs and interchanges, and in taxis and private hire vehicles, unless you’re exempt. If you don’t, you may be unable to travel and you could be fined £200. Read our face coverings guidance.
  • Keep your distance from other passengers where possible.
  • Clean your hands frequently and carry hand sanitiser with you.
  • Use contactless payment if you can.

Playing our part to help keep you safe

TfGM and transport operators have put measures in place to help keep passengers safe:

  • We’ve installed hand sanitiser dispensers at bus stations and interchanges and we’re assessing the roll-out to key Metrolink stops.
  • We have rigorous disinfection regimes in place to keep public transport services, stops, stations and interchanges clean.
  • We’ve introduced measures to support social distancing across the transport network.
