The additional trams will be utilised to increase passenger capacity on the Rochdale to East Didsbury line, Piccadilly to Altrincham and Piccadilly to Bury lines.
Following agreement to upgrade the existing tram fleet a power modelling report has been produced to determine the ability of the existing Metrolink power system to support the proposed upgraded passenger service requirements.
The power modelling report determined that in certain locations on the Bury line additional infrastructure upgrades are required to ensure the operation of the proposed upgraded service pattern.
The following scope of works is in the process of being implemented to ensure continued resilient operation of the upgraded passenger service:
- New Traction Power Substation at Hagside on the Bury line;
- New Traction Power Substation at Heaton Park on the Bury line; and
- New Traction Power Substation at Irk Valley on the Bury line.
Current Progress
Works commenced on track during Summer 2022. Site works to construct the traction substations will commence early January 2023, with entry into service anticipated Summer 2023.
