This year, IRONMAN will host a special 70.3 event in Bolton on Sunday 26 September (8am start time).
Entrants will race the incredible North West English course, experience the open water swim at Pennington Flash, the beautiful bike course scenery, and impressive finish line in the heart of the town centre.
On Saturday 25 September, Ironkids will also take place through the streets of Bolton Town Centre, before finishing under the iconic IRONMAN finish gantry.
If you're travelling to the event our key advice is:
- A number of road closures, detailed below, will be in place all day. Consider walking or cycling instead, if you need to drive, consider using an alternative route to avoid disruption.
- Journey times around the route are likely to take longer so please allow more time for your journey.
- Bus diversions will be in place in Bolton, Chorley and Leigh on the day. Consider walking or cycling for shorter trips as it could be quicker for you.

IRONKIDS: Saturday 25 September
IRONKIDS UK is a run only-event for children aged 3-14. Part of a global series of events with over 50,000 participants, Bolton is home to the largest IRONKIDS event worldwide: over 3,500 young athletes will race through the streets of Bolton Town Centre, before finishing under the iconic IRONMAN finish gantry.
The event will take place from 9am to 3.45pm.
The following bus services will be diverted: 1, 125, 273, 480, 501, 502, 503, 507, 525, 526, 527, 533, 534, 535, 537, 541, 544, 561, 562 and 575.

A number of bus services will be affected by the road closures.
Buses will pick up and drop off at stops on the alternative routes.
Journey times may take longer on alternative routes and might be affected by localised congestion around the diverted route.

Local roads in and around Bolton will be busier than normal as drivers use alternate routes.
The road closures will mean all traffic will need to use alternative routes and there could be congestion on the surrounding roads.
Check your quickest route before every journey.
If you are able to, consider travelling by a different mode of transport on the day of the event. Cycling and walking for local and shorter trips may be quicker.
Bolton is well served by rail, with frequent services running to and from the main station in the town centre.

Walking and Cycling
If you are intending to travel at any point during the event or over the weekend around the affected area, active travel options may provide a better alternative to public transport.
Consider walking or cycling whilst making shorter trips as it may be quicker and also healthier!
