Manchester City v Leeds

Etihad Campus
Tuesday 14 December 2021 from 8:00pm to 10:00pm
Impacted area(s)

Manchester city centre, Beswick, Clayton, Gorton, Openshaw, Ashton

Manchester City host Leeds United at the Etihad in the Premier League on Tuesday 14 December (Kick off 8pm).

If you're travelling to watch the fixture our key advice is:

  • Due to the Christmas Markets, expect the roads around the city centre to be busy from 4pm to 7.30pm. Please consider leaving the car at home or re-routing your journey to avoid the congested areas.
  • City centre Metrolink stops and services on the Ashton line will run to a 12-minute frequency and be busier prior to kick-off. This means you may need to queue before you board a service. Consider setting off a little earlier for a more comfortable journey.

You can follow @OfficialTfGM and @MCRMetrolink on the night for live updates.

Metrolink services to the match

A fast and frequent tram service runs straight to the stadium’s dedicated tram stop Etihad Campus on the Ashton line. You can purchase a zone 1+2 ticket which will cover your journey there and back from the city centre for £3.50.

Based on previous midweek fixtures - as well as city centre stops - the following stops have also been busier on matchdays:

  • Altrincham
  • Chorlton

If you can work flexibly, and are not travelling to the game, consider switching your day in the office for a quieter commute.

Additional crowding is also likely around Piccadilly Gardens due to the Christmas Markets now being in place.

Consider using St Peter's Square or Piccadilly Station to board a service. The journey from Manchester Piccadilly station to the stadium takes less than 10 minutes.

After the game, trams will not serve Holt Town and Velopark until crowds have cleared from the Etihad Campus stop.

Supporters should use contactless for payments, it's a quick and easy way to pay. Just remember to touch in and out!

If you're travelling by Metrolink as a family, you can save money with our family travelcard which allows travel for one to three children (aged under 16) accompanied by one or two adults.

Park and Ride

If you do need to drive to the match, we recommend using one of our Park and Ride sites where you can park for free and then complete your journey to the stadium on the tram.

Two Park and Ride sites are conveniently located close to M60 Junction 23.

From these stops the journey time to the stadium is less than 25 minutes.

Bus services

On match day, the 216 is the most frequent service which runs directly to the stadium. You'll find the service at the north side of Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester city centre.

The 53, 76, 217, 219, 230 and 231 bus services also serve the Etihad Stadium, most within a short stroll of the ground.

However, due to the Christmas Markets taking place it's likely that there will be an increase in journey times of up to 15-20 minutes around the inner ring road. Consider allowing yourself a little extra time if you are intending to catch a service on the night after 4pm.

At the end of the game, shuttle buses head towards Manchester city centre. They will be lined up on Ashton New Road opposite the South Stand.

Journey times will increase on Mancunian Way (eastbound), Ashton New Road, Ashton Old Road, Hyde Road and Alan Turing Way two hours before the match.

Based on previous data collected from midweek fixtures. Drivers on the Mancunian Way (eastbound & westbound) can expect increases of 15 to 20 minutes on top of your normal journey time.

Heavy congestion was also identified on key routes such as Great Ancoats Street and Whitworth Street where drivers can expect an additional 10 minutes added to their journey.

If you’re travelling to the game or driving in the impacted areas area take an alternative route or re-time your journey to before 4.30pm or after 7.30pm to avoid the delays.

A strictly-enforced resident parking scheme is in place on the streets around the ground, which is made clear through on-street signage.

Several roads around the stadium may be closed for approximately 20 minutes after the match to allow pedestrians to leave.

Official car parks

Supporters should be aware that all official car park spaces have to be booked in advance. Please visit the Manchester City website for further information.

Manchester is well served by rail, so why not beat the matchday traffic and take the train! Ashburys is the closest station to the stadium and only a 15-minutes walk. Journeys from Manchester Piccadilly only take five minutes.

The ground is also only a Metrolink ride (10 minutes) from Piccadilly Station in the city centre or a short walk away (20 minutes).
