We offer several resources to enable schools to talk to families, students, and staff about their travel choices and the environment. Whether it’s informal discussions, confidence building, take-home information or full lesson plans, we’ve got you covered!

Travel, Safety and Coronavirus- 15 minute learning pack

Aim: To help pupils better understand how to travel safely in Greater Manchester. Assist with reducing anxiety that students may have around how to be safe on the transport network when returning to school after lockdown restrictions.

Learning outcomes KS1 and KS2:

  • To identify different ways of travelling in Greater Manchester;
  • To discuss how coronavirus has impacted on how we travel; and
  • To better understand how to keep safe when travelling.

  • Identify how coronavirus has impacted how we choose to travel;
  • Discuss how to keep safe when travelling; and

Your Travel Choices and the Environment – 15 minute learning pack

Aim: Help pupils become better able to understand how their travel choices impact on the environment and can assist with starting the conversations needed to help students travelling by walking or cycling.

Learning outcomes KS1:

To better understand how travel impacts our environment and our air quality;
To consider if we could change our usual way of travelling to help the environment.

Key stage 1

Learning outcomes KS2:

  • To better understand how travel impacts our environment and our air quality;
  • To group transport modes from most to least polluting;
  • To consider if we could change our usual way of travelling to help the environment.

  • To identify what sustainable travel is;
  • To better understand how travel impacts our environment and air quality;
  • To consider if we could change our usual way of travelling to help the environment.

Transport at Home - Activity Packs for KS1 and KS2

Created for parents and primary schools to support activity in lockdown, these packs offer a range of fun and creative activities to help Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils enjoy the transport network from home:

Activities include colouring in and counting to join the dots, word searches, quiz sheets and puzzles.

Fit and Fun Ways to Travel

There are a range of resources for teachers at key stages 1, 2 and 3 which include lesson plans, campaigns and case studies highlighting the issues around poor air quality and actions to improve air quality. Resources include:

ModeshiftSTARS

modeshiftstars.org

ModeshiftSTARS is an online platform that provides advice, guidance and information on how to plan and deliver campaigns and activities that engage the school community and encourages travelling sustainably to school. It is also an accreditation platform and rewards schools who enable active and sustainable to school though achieving bronze, silver, gold and platinum awards.

It is free to use as it is funded by TfGM and administered by your local authority. Seven out of 10 Greater Manchester local authorities utilise ModeshiftSTARS and you can check if you are able to register at https://www.modeshiftstars.org/contact-us/starsschools/
