Travel choices for apprentices

TfGM offers support to apprentices on their commute to work with a free and reduced price ticket offer, or a free bike.

To apply you will need to be an apprentice, within the first six months of your training, and live within Greater Manchester. You can only take part once during your apprenticeship.

Free and discounted travel

TfGM, along with System One and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, are offering apprentices free travel on buses and Metrolink trams for 28 days and then reduced price travel tickets for three more 28-day periods.

Period Cost Saving
First 28-day period Free Saving £120
Second 28-day period £25 Saving £95
Third 28-day period £50 Saving £70
Fourth 28-day period £75 Saving £45

The ticket can be used on all Metrolink trams and most bus services in Greater Manchester, including those run by Stagecoach, First and Arriva. You can find a full list of bus companies which will accept the ticket at systemonetravelcards.co.uk.

How to get your free ticket

As long as your apprentice provider is signed up you can take advantage of the scheme straight away.

Speak to your provider who will issue you an application form.

Once you have this, you must complete it and get it countersigned by your apprentice employer and provider, before taking it to a TfGM Travelshop where you will receive your free travel card and voucher booklet.

After using your first free 28-day ticket, you will be able to buy three further reduced price tickets.

To buy your next discounted ticket, your employer must complete and sign the next voucher. Take the whole voucher booklet, with your previous travel ticket and membership card to a TfGM Travelshop where they will then issue your ticket.

If your provider is not signed up to the scheme yet, they can do so by contacting access@tfgm.com.

Bike to work

If cycling is your best option to travel to work but you don’t have a bike, we have an offer of a free refurbished bike, which has been fully repaired and checked.

As part of the scheme you will also receive a free helmet, lock, hi-vis jacket and lights to keep you and your bike safe. Both the bike and accessories will be yours to keep after three months.

If you’ve not previously cycled on the road, or are completely new to cycling, you can take part in free training offered by TfGM to get you up to speed.
