Awareness of travel choices delivers successful relocation

Transport for Greater Manchester’s Travel Choices team worked closely with international postal and logistics business DHL to help them achieve a perfect result.

The company had been based in Manchester at Trafford Park, but when the decision was taken to relocate to Airport City, they wanted to retain as many of their staff as possible.

While they were planning the move, the company approached the Travel Choices team and asked them to discuss with their employees how they would commute to the new site. This was especially important for shift workers, whose public transport options could be limited at certain times.

Personalised Travel Planning (PTP) was offered to all staff which, at the first stage, involved employees filling in a survey explaining details such as where they travel from and at what time.

This was supported with Travel Choices events which were held at the start and end of shifts, so staff could complete the surveys and ask questions.

Each member of staff who filled in a questionnaire was then sent a pack with outlined door to door journey plans for their new commute and, in some cases, free taster tickets for them to try the journey.

The Travel Choices team provided advice on local bus services near the new site, particularly the airport Local Link service which would provide a valuable connection from the nearby airport bus and rail station.

DHL has also promoted car sharing to staff, provided cycle parking and promoted TfGM’s adult cycle training sessions.

Tracy Thorniley, Operations Agent at DHL, said: “The move to Airport City, which is located next to Manchester Airport, was a big success, with the relocation exercise resulting in a 100% retention of staff.

“The Travel Choices team played an important role in helping us achieve such a positive outcome.”
