Public transport

Travel planning for employers
public transport final

Current guidance for use of public transport is available at TfGM's coronavirus pages. Information on this page is provided to support longer term planning for businesses.

Public transport plays an important role in reducing congestion in our urban areas, reduces pressure on car parking and benefits employee health by including walking and cycling as part of door-to-door journeys. Some things you could do to encourage use of public transport in the future might include:

  • Securing a volume discount for season tickets if you can encourage your employees to switch to public transport
  • Offering an interest-free loan to boost take-up of season tickets
  • Encouraging park and ride.

Greater Manchester is well served by train, bus and tram networks. TfGM’s Metrolink network connects many places across Greater Manchester, and our Commercial Team may be able to provide volume ticket discounts for staff in your organisation. Contact or visit the getmethere website for more information.
Making your staff aware of the many 'Park and Ride' locations can also help to reduce car travel in city and town centres - find more information on Park and Ride including a map of locations.

When it’s appropriate to start promoting public transport again, it’s good to back up any incentives with strong marketing. This will ensure people have access to up-to-date information, e.g. timetable changes. Consider displaying information on your intranet, or distribute it in leaflet or poster form.
