Princess Road and Mancunian Way roundabout improvement scheme

Off-peak works are underway

What’s happening

Manchester City Council are carrying out major improvement works on Princess Road and Medlock Street roundabout – two key junctions – to help improve and reduce congestion along the Mancunian Way.

There’s currently a lot of congestion at these junctions, which causes long delays, especially at peak travel times.

For more information on the scheme please visit the Manchester City Council website.

Latest works

Off-peak works are underway. Information on these works will be continually updated below.

Latest update (from Tuesday 5 November)

Currently there is a lane closure on the roundabout and associated slip roads. This is in place from 9.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday only.

Analysis indicates that journey times for drivers have slightly increased by approximately two to three minutes.

However, the busiest times remained in the morning peak between 8am and 9am and in the evening from 4.30pm to 6pm.

Schedule of works

Phase one: October to December 2019

While these works take place, traffic management will be used to create ‘localised safety zones’ for the site workers. These areas will not affect travel at the roundabout.

  • Securing the site, including closing the subways
  • Site clearance
  • Drainage work.

Phase two: January 2020

Work will stop for the Christmas period and start again in January 2020 for around ten months.

Further information regarding the second phase of the works will be published on this page closer to the time.

Why is work taking place?

There’s currently a lot of congestion at the Princess Road and Medlock Street junctions, which causes long delays, especially at peak travel times.

The work will improve traffic flow by replacing the roundabout with two branching (spur) roads, allowing direct access to the city centre and Mancunian Way from Princess Road.

It will also create a safe environment for cyclists and pedestrians.

These improvements are in line with the Greater Manchester 2040 Transport Strategy.

Summary of the plans

  • Work will widen the slip roads on and off the Mancunian Way.

  • The roundabout will be replaced with two branching (spur) roads, allowing traffic from Princess Parkway into the city centre.

  • Creation of a new road to provide direct access onto the Mancunian Way from Princess Road.

  • Replacement of the existing network of underpasses with new, safer access for cyclists and pedestrians.

  • Landscaping, tree planting and providing a more pleasant environment for everyone.

What can you do

If you travel or live in this area, please plan ahead and allow more time for your journey. Consider the following:

  • Can you look at taking an alternative driving route – such as the A34 – to minimise disruption to your journey?

  • Can you change your mode of travel? Metrolink Sale Water Park Park and Ride frequently has capacity and provides a good alternative to driving into the city centre. This is located just off the M60 (junction 6).
