Rochdale roadworks

July, August and September 2019

What’s happening

Rochdale has a programme of works taking place in July, August and September 2019, which are likely to cause high levels of congestion.

Most of the work is road resurfacing/redressing works, which will be undertaken during off-peak hours (9.30am to 3.30pm) or on weekends. It will involve rolling road closures where sections of the road will be re-opened once the works are complete.

The exact dates of the works will be confirmed shortly, with the appropriate bus diversions put in place.

There are also major gas works, on Halifax Road and Falinge Road in July, which will have two-way temporary signals during the duration of the works.

Due to the amount of work taking place across the local area, a number of buses will be diverted and journey times are expected to increase.

The following services will be affected: X58, X63, 17, 17A, 18, 52, 53, 125, 149, 159, 162, 163, 183, 343, 408, 409, 418, 433, 435, 442, 443, 444, 447, 448, 455, 456, 457, 458, 461, 471, 589, 590, 754, 786, 842, 872, 880 and 998.

Metrolink services will not be affected by these road closures.

A 12-minute service operates from Rochdale Town Centre to Manchester city centre via Oldham. The average journey time for trams from Rochdale to Manchester Victoria is 49 minutes.

Metrolink’s Park and Ride facilities may be busier than usual as drivers and bus passengers make alternative arrangements.

Whilst there are a number of services which run into Manchester from Rochdale in the morning and evening, these services are busiest from 6.30am to 9.30am and 4pm to 6.30pm.

If you are looking to avoid the busiest times, we suggest travelling outside of these times.

Cycling and Walking

Approximately 30% of all car journeys made in Greater Manchester every year are less than one kilometre in distance.

That’s just a five-minute bike ride or a 15-minute walk.

Could you walk or cycle shorter journeys such as the school run or a trip to the shops?

By doing so you'll help reduce congestion and air pollution, and be healthier for it.
