Metrolink Knife Arch 12

The Partnership works together and shares resources and intelligence to help prevent and tackle crime, antisocial behaviour and fare evasion on Greater Manchester’s public transport networks.

This is done through a variety of methods, these include:

  • Visible patrolling and dedicated, intelligence-led operations using resources such as knife-arches, sniffer dogs and drones
  • Addressing environmental and infrastructure factors such as vegetation cut-back, CCTV and lighting,
  • Community engagement and,
  • Educational inputs to schools, colleges and universities.

The TravelSafe Partnership delivered educational sessions to over 31,000 children and young adults in 2019, talking to them about the impact of crime and antisocial behaviour on public transport.

The partnership also use a range of other tactics, such as Restorative Justice and neighbourhood watch schemes.

Where the situation warrants it the Partnership can remove passes, issue exclusion orders from TfGM premises and apply for Civil Injunctions against persistent offenders.

Did you know that GMP have a dedicated Transport Unit – a team of over 50 trained police officers who support local districts and partners to deal with ongoing crimes and incidents affecting public transport. They also deal with issues on the road network such as illegal mobile phone use, seatbelts. Search for #TransportUnit on social media for details of what the team has been up to.
