Travelling on Metrolink with a mobility scooter

Mobility scooter size requirements

Your mobility scooter must:

• Be no more than 650mm wide and 1010mm long
• Have a turning radius of no more than 1200mm
• Have a maximum combined weight (scooter and user) of 300kg
• Have a brake release or free-wheel function to allow it to be moved safely if it breaks down

Class 2 mobility scooters are permitted. Larger Class 3 mobility scooters are not permitted.

Travelling safely with your mobility scooter

When travelling on Metrolink, you should:

• Use the designated wheelchair and mobility scooter space on the tram
• Position your scooter safely within the designated space
• Switch off the power and apply the brake while the tram is moving
• Follow any instructions given by Metrolink staff
• Be mindful that trams can be busy, particularly during peak travel times
• Note that the horizontal and vertical distance between the platform edge and tram varies across the Metrolink network

Wheelchair and mobility scooter spaces

You can only travel on a tram if there is space available in the designated wheelchair and mobility scooter area.

If this space is already occupied, you will need to wait for the next available tram.

Before you travel

Before travelling, please ensure that:

• Your mobility scooter is in good working order
• Your battery has enough charge to complete your journey
• Your tyres are inflated and safe to use
• Any roof cover or canopy is removed before boarding a tram

If your mobility scooter breaks down on the network, you should use the brake release or free-wheel function to move it to a safe location and arrange for collection.

Although a permit is no longer required, customers can still access support and training through Shopmobility to help build confidence when travelling on Metrolink. On completion of the training, you can receive an optional permit though this is not required for travel on Metrolink.

Additional guidance

• Requirements for travelling with a mobility scooter may vary between transport operators. If you are travelling on another tram, rail or public transport network, please check their guidance before travelling.
• We strongly recommend that mobility scooters are adequately insured against accidental damage to property or injury to other people.
• You are responsible for ensuring your mobility scooter is in good working order before travelling, including ensuring the battery is sufficiently charged, and tyres are maintained at a safe operating pressure.
• Metrolink staff may refuse travel if they believe a mobility scooter does not meet the published size and safety requirements or cannot be accommodated safely on the tram.
