Cass helps passengers at Leigh bus station

Because everyone should be able to get to places and connect with their communities.

We caught up with Cass, who is a Facilities Site Coordinator at Leigh bus station.

You can read a transcript of our full chat with Cass below.

What's your typical day like?

"A normal day can vary.

"At any given day, various tasks can include the smooth running of operations on a bus station, whether that’s passenger communication, stakeholder communication, diversions and emergency road closures or speaking with operators and local councils.

"Part of my duties include making sure there's a clean, safe working environment for passengers and staff on the bus station.

"If we witness any antisocial behaviour, we contact our control centre and often Greater Manchester Police to resolve any issues on site."

What’s it like when you start in the morning?

"In the morning I'll start my shift by doing a site check and we'll make sure that the site is safe and secure for everybody to use.

"Once that's complete, it normally takes us through to the school run.

"During the school run, we'll ensure the smooth operations of the bus services.

"The busiest time on a bus station can be between 7am and 9am and then again in the evening between 4pm and 7pm.

"No two days are the same at a bus station, as customers have a wide range of queries.

"It can be travel advice lost property, or interconnecting services."

What do you do to help passengers when they're getting the bus?

"If they have difficulty in reading the small print, we can enlarge the forms for the passenger so it makes them easier to read the form. We also help people them fill them out.

"Being stationed on one site means you get to know the people who are travelling through on a daily basis.

"You build up a rapport with them and have banter with them.

"Some of the kids that are travelling through, they get to know you too."

Do you have any examples where you’ve helped customers?

"Recently I had a customer who was travelling with a young person and she'd left her teddy bear on the bus.

"I helped the customer to fill out a lost property and I also contacted the team at Wigan because I knew they had an office based on site.

"Within a few hours, the teddy was found and it was reunited with the family the very next day."

Why do you think your role is important?

"Because everyone should be able to get to places and connect with their communities.

"I believe that my role helps to bring people together and enjoy their everyday lives."
