Lisa helps customers stay safe as they travel on the Bee Network

because public transport's so important to individual lives

We caught up with Lisa, who is a TravelSafe Support and Enforcement Officer on the Bee Network.

You can read a transcript of our full chat with Lisa below.

What does a TravelSafe Support and Engagement Officer do?

"Well, our role is as diverse as Greater Manchester itself.

"It can be anything from revenue protection, educating youths and young people about what anti-social behaviour is, what crime is, conditions of travel, supporting more vulnerable passengers or helping tourists with customer service."

What’s a typical day like for you?

"Our typical day is carrying out revenue inspections. We carry out patrols at stations, making sure that people are safe.

"If they've got any enquiries or need some general knowledge or geographical knowledge, we'll support them.

"You know, like so they, they have an idea of where they're going just so they feel like they, they're in a safe place providing customer service.

"Making sure that they everyone knows where they're going and that they are travelling safe.
That's the biggest part of our role."

Do you have any examples of a time you went above and beyond helping a customer?

"I think one of the most heart-warming for me was actually New Year's Day.

I was in Rochdale and we'd gone into the interchange early in the morning and I saw a lady lay down.

"Even though she was asleep, she was actually shaking. I went over to do a welfare check and it became very apparent she was homeless. We got her a hot drink and I spoke to her for a few moments.

"It took us a good hour or so speaking to her until we managed to get a number of a family member who was able to come and collect her.

"She'd actually been missing three months on the street.

"She'd met some people and she'd just basically got in with the wrong crowd and she'd been missing for three months.

"The family had no idea where she was. Her brothers came to pick her up.

"Weeks later, I saw the her again and she just came and gave me a hug and thanked me for being there."

Why does this job matter to you?

"Because public transport's so important to individual lives.

"We’re here to ensure that everybody's needs and wants are met, including helping people feel safe, being supportive, even just signposting them to other agencies as well."
