Matthew works across the network keeping passengers safe

We caught up with Matthew, who is a TravelSafe Support and Enforcement Officer on the Bee Network.

What does a TravelSafe Support and Engagement Officer do?

"All in all, we’re here to make the whole network a better place and ensure our customers feel safe.

"We also carry out revenue inspections and support passengers at stations."

What’s a typical day like for you?

"Our typical day is carrying out revenue inspections. We carry out patrols at stations, making sure that people are safe.

"If they've got any enquiries or need some general knowledge or geographical knowledge, we'll support them.

"You know, like so they, they have an idea of where they're going just so they feel like they, they're in a safe place providing customer service.

"Making sure that they everyone knows where they're going and that they are travelling safe.
That's the biggest part of our role."

Do you have any examples of a time you went above and beyond helping a customer?

"There was a time when I was working at Bury Interchange and noticed someone who had no idea where he was.

"It was 10 o clock at night, during the winter period, and it was really cold. He only had shorts and a t-shirt on, and it was freezing.

"We called NWAS and waited with him until the ambulance arrived. It turns out the passenger had dementia and he knew where he lived and he knew his family.

"So I made the decision to get on the bus service with him and take him home. I got him home safely and ensured that his next of kin was there.

"I felt like I'd done something good that day."

Why does this job matter to you?

"Because you can make an impact on everyone. For me, it's very mental health based.

"I like making an impact. I like helping people. That's essentially what I like to do. So that's what matters to me."
