Greater Manchester's Black History Month 2025

This October, we join communities Greater Manchester in marking Black History Month 2025. This is a time to honour the legacy, achievements, and ongoing contributions of Black people in Britain and beyond.

The theme this year—“Standing Firm in Power and Pride”—is a tribute to the resilience, leadership, and cultural identity that define Black communities. It celebrates the trailblazers who have shaped history, the artists and activists who continue to inspire change, and the everyday acts of strength and pride that build a more inclusive future.

At TfGM, we’re proud to stand alongside our communities in recognising this legacy and taking action to break down barriers. On this page, we’re sharing some of things we’re doing at TfGM to support Black History Month and drive forward our commitment to racial equity and inclusion.

Caribbean and African Health Network's launch event

We were proud to take part in the launch of Greater Manchester’s Black History Month, hosted by the Caribbean and African Health Network (CAHN) at Gorton Monastery on 25th September. The event brought together community leaders, organisations, and residents to celebrate black heritage, culture, and achievement across the region.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester delivered a powerful keynote speech, reaffirming the city-region’s commitment to racial equity and inclusive growth. Our team had the opportunity to speak with attendees about the Bee Network and how we’re working to promote inclusive employment through the Race Equity Framework.

Spotlight on our partnership with 10,000 Black Interns

As part of our ongoing commitment to equity and inclusion, we're proud to spotlight our partnership with the 10,000 Black Interns (10kBI). This initiative is a key part of our work to diversify our workforce and create meaningful employment pathways for underrepresented communities.

We’re delighted to share the story of Sandra, who recently completed a six-week internship through 10kBI and has now progressed into a full-time role at Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

Sandra’s journey is a powerful example of how targeted programmes can open doors, build confidence, and support long-term career development. She’s generously shared her reflections and advice for future applicants.

Listening to communities, responding with action

We know from our lived experience groups and community engagement that barriers to employment remain a key concern for many ethnic minority residents across Greater Manchester. These barriers can include limited access to networks, lack of tailored support, and systemic inequalities in recruitment and progression.

As an anchor institution and major employer in the city region, we recognise our responsibility to help break down these barriers. That’s why we’ve been listening closely to communities and responding with action.

Alongside our work with 10kBI, we’re also proud to have our GM Elevate programme, which is designed to nurture and accelerate the leadership potential of ethnic minority colleagues within TfGM. These programmes are part of a wider strategy to ensure our workforce reflects the diversity of the communities we serve and that everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
