Powered by Transport for Greater Manchester

The core objective of Project Synergy is to develop technology which would enable connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) to be trialled in Greater Manchester.

Through this project, TfGM, who manage the majority of the traffic lights in Greater Manchester, have trialled the use of vehicle-to-infrastructure communication technology and Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA) technology.  The combination of this technology enables drivers to be informed, via an in-car display, of roadside messages (e.g. Accident Ahead) and the correct approach speed to traffic lights in order to minimise the need to brake.  Additionally, TfGM has been able to develop Principles and processes which would aid in ensuring that any deployment of CAVs in Greater Manchester would align with Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040 and the associated Network Principles.  Engagement with the public of Greater Manchester has been a key feature of the project with a Citizens Conversation taking place in 2019 and Stockport Council undertaking a consultation with the general public in 2021.

Learnings from this project will help to ensure that Greater Manchester is well positioned for a future in which CAVs may play a significant role.
