Summer 2026

In order to improve the step-free access across the tram network, an investment of £1.7 million will fund the replacement of eight ageing lifts over the course of the next nine months.

Each lift replacement is expected to take around two months to complete, during which time the affected lift will be out of service.

The first pair of lifts to be replaced are at Heaton Park and Failsworth. Further pairs of lift renewal works are planned to take place sequentially at Hollinwood and Freehold then; Dane Road and Brooklands, and; Chorlton and Firswood.

Heaton Park: From Wednesday 29 July 2026

The lift on the Bury-bound platform at Heaton Park will be replaced with works taking place from Wednesday 29 July 2026. During this time, the lift will be out of service.

The lift on the Manchester-bound platform will remain open for customers.

Works will take place during the day however, some overnight works are required for the lift replacement.

Out of hours working is planned to take place between 12.30am and 5.30am each night from Tuesday 4 until Friday 7 August and then again on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 September.

There is potential for this work to create some noise at times. To help mitigate this impact, noisier work will take place during the daytime where possible and the noise levels will be monitored.

For customers making a journey from Manchester towards Heaton Park tram stop, we advise you to stay on the tram for a further two stops and alight at Besses o' th' Barn which is an island platform.

Customers should then board a Manchester-bound tram and return to Heaton Park tram stop where they are able to use the lift to exit the tram stop.

For customers making a journey from Heaton Park tram stop to Bury, we advise you to board a Manchester-bound tram and travel two stops and alight at Crumpsall.

Customers are able to use the track crossing to change platforms and board a Bury-bound tram.

As well as providing travel advice, our Customer Service Team can also arrange a taxi for passengers who require step-free access to the Heaton Park Bury-bound platform.

Passengers arriving at Heaton Park tram stop from the direction of Manchester on a Bury bound tram and who require step-free access during this time will be able to continue by tram to Prestwich or Besses o’ th’ Barn tram stops and then request a taxi to be provided from Prestwich or Besses o’ th’ Barn tram stops back to Heaton Park tram stop.

Passengers who are starting their journey from Heaton Park tram stop and travelling towards Bury and who require step-free access during this time will be able to request a taxi to be provided from Heaton Park tram stop to Prestwich or Besses o’ th’ Barn tram stops.

Both options are available 7am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 8pm on weekends and bank holidays.

Outside of Customer Service operating hours, customers can call 0161 244 0701. This is a temporary number dedicated to supporting accessible travel during the lift replacement programme outside of normal Customer Service operating hours. Staff will be unable to assist with any other queries.

Failsworth: From Monday 3 August 2026

The lift on the Rochdale-bound platform at Failsworth will be replaced with works taking place from Monday 3 August 2026. During this time, the lift will be out of service.

The lift on the Manchester-bound platform will remain open for customers.

Works will take place during the day however, this is subject to change and any updates to working hours will be provided as soon as possible.

For customers making a journey from Manchester towards Failsworth tram stop, we advise you to alight the tram at Failsworth on the Rochdale-bound platform, cross the tracks to the Manchester-bound platform, and use the lift to exit the tram stop.

For customers making a journey from Failsworth tram stop to Rochdale, we advise you to use the lift to the Manchester-bound platform and cross the tracks to the Rochdale-bound platform where you can board a service.

As well as providing travel advice, our Customer Service Team can also arrange a taxi for passengers who require step-free access to the Failsworth Rochdale-bound platform.

Passengers arriving at Failsworth tram stop from the direction of Manchester and who require step-free access during this time will be able to continue by tram to Hollinwood tram stop and then request a taxi to be provided back to Failsworth tram stop.

Passengers travelling towards Manchester city centre from Failsworth tram stop who require step-free access during this time will also be able to request a taxi from Failsworth tram stop to Newton Heath and Moston tram stop.
