Piccadilly Train Station Renewal Works

Saturday 14 - Sunday 22 February 2026

From Saturday 14 until Sunday 22 February 2026, Network Rail works will be taking place, delivering track and signalling upgrades to Manchester Piccadilly Rail Station. Whilst the works are taking place, Piccadilly Station will be closed to trains from the south and east and the city.

A heavily reduced service will operate from Platforms 13 and 14. Journeys by rail in Greater Manchester will be impacted, with a limited number of rail services operating via the station.

Tram services will not be affected and will continue to operate as usual via Piccadilly.

If you're travelling in Greater Manchester during this time, make sure to plan ahead before setting off. As roads, as well as trams and buses may be busier than usual between 14 - 22 February, please allow more time than usual for your journeys. Further works will be taking place at Piccadilly Station, on Sunday 1 March and on Sunday 22 March 2026, from the start of service until 1pm only.

Whilst the works are taking place, there will be changes to many rail services which operate via Piccadilly, with some services cancelled or running on an altered route.

The following services will be impacted:

From the south of Manchester:

All Avanti West Coast Main Line services to Manchester will terminate at Stockport.
All Cross Country services from the south and south west to Manchester will terminate at Stockport.
A limited service will call at Manchester Airport from Crewe. All other airport services will be replaced by buses.
Services from South Wales to Manchester will terminate at Crewe. Onward connections will be available.

To the east of Manchester:

Services from Glossop and Hadfield will terminate at Guide Bridge.
Fast services from Sheffield will terminate at Stockport.
Stopping services from Sheffield will terminate at Guide Bridge.
Services from Leeds and Huddersfield will only travel to Manchester Victoria.

From the north and west of Manchester:

Services from North Wales and Chester will terminate at Manchester Oxford Road via Warrington Bank Quay.
Services from Liverpool and Warrington Central will terminate at Manchester Oxford Road.
Trains from Preston and Bolton will terminate at Manchester Victoria or Manchester Oxford Road.
TransPennine Express services from Scotland will terminate at Preston.
Services from Chester via Northwich will terminate at Altrincham.

To keep you moving whilst the works are taking place, valid rail tickets will be accepted on the following Bee Network buses and trams:

All Manchester Piccadilly station facilities will remain open, including the ticket office, Passenger Assist lounge, toilets and retail outlets - both inside the station and on Station Approach.

Metrolink services will continue to operate as usual via Piccadilly, and the platform will continue to be accessible via the station whilst works are on-going.

The works are part of a programme of essential investment into Piccadilly, ensuring the safety and longevity of the station's main lines into the future.

Nearly eight million pounds (£7.9m) is being invested to improve tracks, points and signalling systems on the southern approach to Manchester Piccadilly station.

Teams will replace 11 sets of points, renew timber sleepers with modern, concrete equivalents and bring lineside equipment bang up to date across six lines to improve future journeys for passengers and freight.
