Piccadilly Train Station renewal works

Sunday 1 March and Sunday 22 March 2026

Manchester Piccadilly Train Station will be closed to trains from the south and east again on both Sunday 1 March and Sunday 22 March, from the start of service until 1pm. This is to facilitate the completion of the essential works which took place between 14 - 22 February.

Whilst the works are on-going, Platforms 13 and 14 will remain open for trains running on a reduced timetable to:

Liverpool Lime Street via Eccles and Earlestown
Blackpool North via Bolton
Chester via Earlestown (Sundays only - this is a Transport for Wales service)

Please leave more time than usual if you're travelling via the city centre on these dates, and plan your journey ahead before you set off.

Metrolink services will not be affected and will continue to operate as usual via Piccadilly. Separate tram works will be taking place on the Rochdale line on Sunday 22 March. No services will operate between Victoria - Rochdale, for the duration of the day. Find out more information on our dedicated tram works webpage.

Whilst the works are taking place, there will be changes to many rail services which operate via Piccadilly, with some services cancelled or running on an altered route.

Avanti West Coast:

Until 12:30pm, no trains will run between Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly.

The first service able to run will be the 12:55pm Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston.

CrossCountry:

Replacement buses will be provided by East Midlands Railway and Transport for Wales between Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly.

East Midlands Railway:

Until 12:30pm, no trains will run between Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly / Liverpool Lime Street.

Replacement buses will run between Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly. For travel between Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street, you should use alternative train services.

Northern:

Until 12.30pm trains will operate on the following amended tiemtable between Manchester Piccadilly and:

Blackpool North: Trains will run to an amended timetable between Manchester Oxford Road and Blackpool North.
Barrow-in-Furness / Windermere: Trains will run between Manchester Oxford Road and Barrow-in-Furness / Windermere.
Crewe via Manchester Airport: Trains will run between Stockport and Manchester Airport / Crewe.
Buxton: Trains will run to an amended timetable between Stockport and Buxton.
Chester: Trains will not run.
Liverpool Lime Street via Earlestown: Trains will run to an amended timetable between Manchester Oxford Road and Liverpool Lime Street.

TransPennine Express:

Until 12:30pm, TransPennine Express will operate the following amended timetable:

Preston and Glasgow / Edinburgh
Manchester Piccadilly and Cleethorpes
Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Oxford Road
Stalybridge and Manchester Victoria

Transport for Wales:

No Transport for Wales services will run between Manchester Oxford Road and Manchester Piccadilly / Manchester Airport, or between Manchester Piccadilly and Crewe via Stockport.

Rail replacement buses will operate between Manchester Piccadilly and Crewe.

To keep you moving whilst the works are taking place, valid rail tickets will be accepted on the following Bee Network buses and trams:

All Manchester Piccadilly station facilities will remain open, including the ticket office, Passenger Assist lounge, toilets and retail outlets - both inside the station and on Station Approach.

Metrolink services will continue to operate as usual via Piccadilly, and the platform will continue to be accessible via the station whilst works are on-going.

The works are part of a programme of essential investment into Piccadilly, ensuring the safety and longevity of the station's main lines into the future.

Nearly eight million pounds (£7.9m) is being invested to improve tracks, points and signalling systems on the southern approach to Manchester Piccadilly station.

Teams will replace 11 sets of points, renew timber sleepers with modern, concrete equivalents and bring lineside equipment bang up to date across six lines to improve future journeys for passengers and freight.
