Passenger Information Displays survey privacy policy

1. Summary of the survey

Transport for Greater Manchester ["TfGM"] wants to understand passenger perceptions of bus travel and current travel behaviours and experiences particularly around information accessibility and attractiveness of public transport in Greater Manchester. The findings from this research will help understand whether the installation of Passenger Information Displays (PIDs) meet user needs and influence travel behaviour.

The research will be conducted by surveying bus users at bus stops around Greater Manchester. We have commissioned AECOM to undertake these interviews with members of the public on our behalf.

TfGM is the Data Controller for personal information collected in the survey. This means that we decide how your personal data is processed and for what purposes.

2. What information we will collect from you

Participants and survey respondents will be asked for demographic data. This is to allow us to analyse whether certain demographical characteristics are common for the same views/experiences.

Demographic questions are optional and include:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Health and disability

Data collected from this research will be aggregated, so you will not be identified. Findings from the research may also be published.

If you wish to be entered into the prize draw or take part in future research, we will also collect your name and contact information. Details collected for the prize draw will be deleted once fieldwork has ended and the winner is contacted (approximately 6 weeks). Contact details collected for participation in future research will be deleted after two years, or sooner if you withdraw your consent.

3. How information is collected

AECOM will speak to bus users in and around Greater Manchester by way of on-street surveys.

4. Our lawful basis for processing personal data under GDPR

Article 6 1(e): the processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in the controller.

5. How we ensure the security of your data

TfGM comply with their obligations under the GDPR by keeping personal data up to date; by storing and destroying it securely; by not collecting or retaining excessive amounts of data; by protecting personal data from loss, misuse, unauthorised access and disclosure and by ensuring that appropriate technical measures are in place to protect personal data.

6. Information retention

TfGM will retain the survey data for as long as it is considered useful for the research objectives (up to seven years). Contact details collected for participation in future research will be deleted after two years, or sooner if you withdraw your consent.

AECOM will retain the data until their report is finalised and shared with TfGM. Following this all personal data will be deleted (this will be done by December 2027 at the latest). TfGM will be informed upon deletion. Any telephone numbers collected for entry into the prize draw will be deleted once fieldwork has ended and the winner is contacted (no later than November 2025).

All data collected as part of this project will remain in UK.

8. Data sharing

The information collected as part of this research will only be used by TfGM for the purposes explained above.
