Transport for Greater Manchester's (TfGM) Access for All programme is making it easier to travel independently by providing step-free access at stations across Greater Manchester.
Step-free access means you can get from the station entrance to the platforms without having to use stairs or escalators. This usually includes providing lifts or ramps and routes, alongside improved lighting and CCTV, to make stations easier and safer for everyone to use.
The programme helps more people travel confidently, including disabled passengers, older people, parents or carers using pushchairs and people travelling with luggage.
Working with Network Rail, Northern and the Department for Transport, we are making it easier and more convenient to use the rail network.
Fewer than half of Greater Manchester's rail stations are fully accessible. By 2028, almost two-thirds will be step-free, helping create a more accessible Bee Network for everyone.
What is step-free access?
Step-free access allows passengers to travel between the station entrance, ticket facilities and platforms without using stairs or escalators.
Depending on the station, improvements may include:
- New lifts
- Footbridges with lift access
- Accessible ramps
- Improved lighting, CCTV and station facilities
