Improving journeys: Ashton to Stockport

We’re developing plans to make it easier for people to travel between Ashton and Stockport - whether you’re catching the bus, walking, wheeling or cycling.

The scheme will cover a 10.2-mile route between Ashton and Stockport. It follows the current 330 bus route, linking communities along the A560 (through Bredbury and Woodley) and the A627 (through Dukinfield).

Work will begin on the Stockport sections this summer, with the Ashton sections starting in autumn 2026.

Alongside changes to certain roads and traffic signals to speed up bus journeys and reduce delays, the proposals also include improving:

  • The quality of bus stops along the route.
  • The journeys from people’s homes, work or other destinations to and from bus stops.
  • Walking, wheeling and cycling routes - including dropped kerbs and push-button crossings - along with improvements to public spaces and nearby neighbourhoods.

The scheme is being delivered to:

  • Increase the number of walking, wheeling, cycling and bus journeys along the route.
  • Improve the performance of bus services.
  • Improve where passengers wait for buses, making sure they are fully accessible and are comfortable, safe and secure.
  • Improve the safety, security, comfort and ease of travel to the walking and cycling network.
  • Help grow the local economy and support regeneration by making it easier for people to reach jobs, town centres and other key destinations along the route.

Dowson Road, Hyde proposals

In Autumn 2025 we asked for your views on a proposed new pedestrian crossing on Dowson Road in Hyde.

We're using this feedback to help shape the next stages of the project.

Next steps

Planned works in the Stockport area will continue throughout the summer and into autumn, as well as in the months ahead. Further details of planned roadworks can be found on the Stockport Council website.

Following consultation on the proposals in Tameside, a final business case will be reviewed by decision makers to help decide whether the scheme should go ahead.

We’re also developing other proposals for Tameside, which people will be able to share their thoughts on in the future.

In the meantime, we’ll begin improving some of the older bus stops along the 330 route this year. This includes new shelters at some stops, added seating at others, and upgrades such as improved pavements and clearer road markings.

Funding

Funding for the work has been provided through the government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS), which saw Greater Manchester awarded £1.07bn to help deliver the Bee Network.
