Improving journeys: Wigan to Leigh

Through a joined-up Bee Network, we’re helping more people get where they need to go with safer, easier, affordable connections by bus, tram, train, or walking, wheeling and cycling.

As part of this, we’re investing in schemes to make travel easier and to help people get from A to B.

The plans are being put in place to speed up bus journeys and reduce delays for all road users including motorists by easing congestion, improve bus stops so they are fully accessible, comfortable, safe and secure and improve journeys by walking, wheeling and cycling by making them as safe as possible.

As part of this, TfGM is working with Wigan Council to improve journeys from Wigan through Hindley and Hindley Green, to Leigh.

Improvements at the Bird I’th Hand Junction

As part of this, Wigan Council is making improvements at the Bird I’th’ Hand junction in Hindley starting from Monday 8 September, with planned completion before the end of the year.

This junction historically becomes congested, meaning buses are caught in traffic and arrive late. This is partly due to traffic turning right from Wigan Road onto Liverpool Road blocking vehicles turning left or going straight ahead.

To help tackle this issue, the right turn lane will be extended to increase capacity at the junction and help improve bus journey times and reliability, as well as helping prevent other road users from becoming stuck in traffic.

Other improvements that are being made include:

  • Moving the bus stop and layby on the northwest bound side of the road further back to make the road wider.
  • Upgrades to the existing pedestrian crossings to put in push button facilities to improve safety and accessibility.

Impact of works

From Monday, 8 September to early December, roadworks will be in place at the A58/ A577 junction of Wigan Road with Liverpool Road, Atherton Road and Market Street in Hindley.

During the works, narrow lanes will be in operation, however, two-way traffic will be maintained. Please leave extra time for your journeys.

The bus stop next to Bird-I'th’ Hand public house will be closed during the works and the footpath on the southwest side of Wigan Road will be closed to pedestrians.
