About the scheme
Until Spring 2025, works will take place to improve Deansgate. This will be a permanent change and will restrict traffic to a southbound direction only between the junctions of Quay Street/Peter Street and Liverpool Road/Great Bridgewater Street. There will still be access for cyclists in both directions.
Further along in the scheme there will be a westbound bus gate on Whitworth Street West followed by active travel improvements to Bridgewater Viaduct, linking up to the cycle lanes on Chester Road.
Aims of the scheme
- Encourage more people to walk and cycle along this route.
- Link walking and cycling routes to each other, and to places where people want to go, including a continuous cycleway from Chorlton.
- Connect city centre rail and tram stations.
- Reduce the amount of traffic entering the city centre, in line with the City Centre Transport Strategy.
- Reduce the risk of road traffic accidents.
- Expand the area across the city centre where pedestrians have priority, and provide more space for walking.
Details of the works
Works are progressing to make Deansgate a better environment for walking and cycling and reduce car trips within the city centre.
The final phase of the scheme will see a number of overnight closures between Monday 3 and Tuesday 25 March.
The closures are necessary to facilitate carriageway resurfacing works. Works will take place from 7pm each night until 5am the following morning
Diversion information will be clearly signed locally.
