Before and after school congestion warning

The graph below compares September 2020 vehicle journey times (when there were less people travelling on the network due to COVID-19 restrictions) with September 2019 data.

Journey time data shows that congestion is worse on the roads surrounding the school, at the start and end of the school day on __B6194 Rochdale Road between 8am-9am and 3pm-3.30pm. __

This could be due to more students arriving and departing to schools via car, as well as other congestion reasons such as roadworks and incidents.

To minimise this increased congestion spike, students and parents are encouraged to have a look at the public transport alternatives and dedicated school services below.

Commercial bus services

The 181 bus serves Chadderton, Royton and Shaw. Students can board and alight in Shaw and walk to the school in around 5-10 minutes via Rochdale Road.

Duplicate bus services

Capacity on the commercial bus network continues to be significantly reduced due to coronavirus social distancing measures.

TfGM are working with operators to run around 300 additional bus journeys each weekday across the region to help students using public transport get to and from school and college safely.

Duplicate bus journeys exclusively for school and college students run behind the original scheduled service at set times, with the usual route number starting in ‘S’ to show they are school services.

Find out which routes are supported by duplicate bus services by clicking here.

Cycling to school is also another recommended method of transport with a number of cycle racks available within the school grounds.

Students are reminded to stay safe when cycling by wearing helmets and, especially during the winter months, having lights on their bicycle and wearing bright reflective clothing.
