Planned roadworks will take place in Mottram-in-Longdendale/Hollingworth, Tameside from January 2025.
These are preliminary works to prepare for the future construction of one of two new link roads between Manchester and Sheffield, with traffic management and closure/narrowing of cycle and vehicle lanes remaining in place throughout the scheme.
Upcoming works:
- Roe Cross Road - overnight works on Wednesday 8 January
- Mottram Moor - overnight works on Monday 13 January
- Mottram Moor - eastbound lane closure from Sunday 19 January for duration of scheme
Further roadwork dates are yet to be confirmed, but the construction of the two new link roads is expected to take three years to complete.
Roe Cross Road works
On Wednesday 8 January, between the hours of 7pm and 6am, three way traffic signals will be installed to allow for works to remove the traffic island & install new traffic lanes. These alterations will take place between the junctions of Stalybridge Road and Edge Lane.
Impact to road users
On completion, Roe Cross Road will maintain one lane in each direction with narrowed lanes for the duration of the scheme.
Impact to cyclists & pedestrians
Cycle routes will be closed in both directions, so cyclists will be required to use the main carriageway following the works.
The northbound footpath will be closed with pedestrians directed to the opposite side, with a signed diversion route in place.
Mottram Moor works
From 8pm on Monday 13 January to 6am on Tuesday 14 January, a lane closure will take effect on Mottram Moor between Back Moor traffic signals and the Gun Inn pub. During the works, a pedestrian island will be removed to allow future layout changes.
Following this, from Sunday 19 January, there will be a eastbound lane closure on the section of road between Back Moor traffic lights and the bus layby. The lane closure will remain for the duration of the scheme as it enables critical work to take place, such as utility diversions.
Impact to road users
Beyond these works, the lane closure will remain in place with single file traffic in both directions.
Why the works are taking place
The A57 between Manchester and Sheffield currently suffers from heavy congestion, creating unreliable journeys.
The A57 Link Road project aims to improve connectivity between both cities, increase reliability of journeys and reduce congestion through Mottram in Longdendale and between Manchester and Sheffield over the years to come.
This scheme will consist of two new link roads including a dual carriageway from M67 Junction 4 to a new junction on the A57(T) at Mottram Moor, and a new single carriageway link from the A57(T) at Mottram Moor to a new junction on the A57 in Wooley Bridge.
National Highways have planned the works to minimise disruption for all modes of travel, while enabling the works to be carried out safely and efficiently.
