The guided trial will enable observation of how carrying bikes on Metrolink could work in practice and will add useful insight to research already undertaken by TfGM and the operator. The Metrolink network was not originally designed to carry bikes, so the guided trial will highlight what adaptations to the network may be necessary to allow safe storage of bikes on trams by customers in normal passenger service. There are two spaces on each tram which are prioritised for wheelchairs, mobility scooters and prams – during the trial, bikes will be allowed to use these spaces. However, if someone with a wheelchair, mobility scooter or pram needs the space then the bike will be asked to move. Public safety will not be compromised.
The supervised nature of the guided trial will be considered when the results are analysed because during normal operation, staff are not always available on the trams to supervise storage of bikes and priority spaces. The guided trial results will include observations from researchers, feedback from the volunteers with bikes, passengers and equality groups, and any impacts on the Metrolink service.
