Please introduce yourself
"My name is Sandra Tchako, I'm HR Assistant and I joined TfGM in 2025."
What motivated you to apply for the 10,000 Black Interns programme (10KBI) programme, and what were your expectations going into it?
"My main goal was to get an internship in HR, as I hadn’t had the chance to gain corporate experience during university.
"I’d seen the 10KBI programme on LinkedIn and knew someone who’d got an internship through them, so I thought, why not apply? I didn’t have big expectations; I just wanted to see where it would take me. When I was offered the opportunity, it became exciting."
Can you share your experience as an intern and the projects or tasks you were involved in?
"My internship was amazing. I worked in the People Team in HR, alongside two other interns in Legal and Audit.
"My main project was to speak with senior leaders about the onboarding process, what worked, what could be improved, and then present my findings to the Head of HR and other colleagues. It was a great learning experience."
What made you want to stay with TfGM and apply for the HR Assistant role?
"I love the organisation and the team.
"The environment is supportive and positive, everyone is kind and approachable.
"Before joining, I didn’t realise how many different departments there were at TfGM, beyond what you might expect. The opportunity to stay on and keep learning was too good to miss."
How did you feel supported during your internship and now in your current role?
"I felt really supported, especially by my manager, who set up regular one-to-ones. That made it easy to ask questions and get advice.
"The whole HR team was welcoming, everyone was open to have a chat and happy to help."
Why do you think the 10KBI programme is important for organisations like TfGM?
"It helps organisations reach a wider range of people and shows that opportunities are open to everyone, regardless of background.
"The programme also supports diversity and gives people, especially those without experience, a chance to get started."
What are your aspirations for the future, and what skills are you hoping to develop?
"I want to keep learning and see where my career takes me, hopefully in HR, but I’m open to different paths.
"Right now, I’m working on building my presentation and communication skills, and becoming more confident in those areas."
What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying to the 10KBI programme or TfGM?
"Go for it!
"Don’t hesitate - any experience is valuable, and you don’t have to be perfect to apply. This is where you learn and grow, so just take the opportunity."
