Park & Ride sites across the Metrolink network have been specifically selected to reflect anticipated demand and to complement proposed service patterns, which in turn will deliver increased passenger capacity. The proposals include expansions of the existing Whitefield and Radcliffe Park & Ride sites.
The objective of these two schemes is to increase the capacity at the current Park & Ride sites by expanding the existing decked car parks to allow greater access to the Metrolink network and the additional capacity that will be delivered through deployment of the 27 additional trams.
Project Outputs
- Reduction in unsociable parking in the immediate residential areas;
- Increased number of parking spaces, which maintains the attractiveness of Metrolink by providing greater access to the Metrolink network and the additional capacity generated through deployment of the 27 new trams, supporting future growth;
- Increased capacity at key growth areas to support sustainable economic growth;
- Contribution to the attractiveness of Greater Manchester to visit and invest, and provide a resilient, well connected, transport system;
- Increased patronage and use of public transport, contributing to the protection of the environment by reducing emissions; and
- Contribution to the delivery of Greater Manchester’s and Bury’s strategic objectives, including the 2040 Transport Strategy, Five Year Delivery Plan, Bury’s Local Transport Implementation Plan, and Greater Manchester’s 2038 zero carbon objective.
The schemes will increase capacity by:
- Whitefield Park & Ride – 123 additional parking bays; and
- Radcliffe Park & Ride - 111 additional parking bays.
Neighbouring properties have been considered to ensure:
- The scale and proportions are appropriate for the location, using a lightweight steel frame structure;
- Lighting will include shields and spill protection; and
- Landscaping will be enhanced for screening to protect neighbours.
Planning approval
The Whitefield and Radcliffe Park & Ride schemes were approved by Bury Council’s Planning Committee in November 2020.
In addition, Bury Council’s Planning Committee approved a separate planning application in December 2020, seeking permission to build a Temporary Park & Ride facility situated behind Spring Lane School and Radcliffe Leisure Centre, to provide sufficient car parking spaces during construction of the expansions in order to minimise disruption.
Timescales
The Whitefield and Radcliffe Park & Ride expansions have now been completed.
- Whitefield Park & Ride has been expanded to provide additional 123 parking bays and re-opened on Tuesday 25th January 2022.
- Radcliffe Park & Ride has been expanded to provide 111 additional parking bays and re-opened on Monday 16th May 2022.
The temporary car park accessed via Spring Lane for passengers during the construction of Radcliffe and Whitefield P&Rs, has now permanently closed. All Metrolink customers should use Radcliffe or Whitefield Park & Ride facilities. The temporary car park has been reinstated as agreed with Bury Council, and the development of the new high school on this site will commence.
