The future of tram

Developing Greater Manchester’s rapid transit network is essential to keeping the city-region moving and the economy growing.

The Metrolink tram system is one of Greater Manchester’s major rapid transit success stories.

From humble beginnings, Metrolink has expanded to become the largest light rail network in the UK. Services now run on eight lines to 99 stops covering nearly 64 miles.

We continue to explore new ways to expand the Metrolink network and develop new rapid transit schemes as part of the Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040.

In the medium-term (to 2030) new Metrolink lines are being considered, along with potential for ‘tram-train’ services.

Longer-term options being explored include tunnelled ‘metro-style’ services under the city centre.

Metrolink phase 3: monitoring and evaluation

Metrolink phase 3 consists of lines to Ashton-under-Lyne, East Didsbury, Oldham and Rochdale, and Manchester Airport. We're keen to learn from the experience of implementing phase 3 and to carry out the required monitoring and evaluation activity to fulfil government funding conditions.

Trafford Park line: monitoring and evaluation

The Trafford Park line extension consists of 5.5km of new route westwards from Pomona, with six new stops (Wharfside, Imperial War Museum, Village, Parkway, Barton Dock Road, and Trafford Centre).

Metrolink Capacity Improvement Programme

The Metrolink Capacity Improvement Programme (MCIP) was created to deliver 27 new trams, depot and power system expansions, and improved car parking facilities.
