Eccles Line Groove Grinding

Mid-September until mid-November

From mid-September until mid-November work will take place on the Eccles line at various locations between Ladywell and Exchange Quay.

Work will take place between 1am and 5am Monday to Friday, when Metrolink services are not operating.

Works

The groove grinding works are to increase the depth of the track. Groove grinding is a maintenance procedure which will be carried out by KeolisAmey Metrolink (KAM) to prolong the life of the existing rail and defer lengthy and disruptive closures needed to replace the track.

Potential disruption

There is potential for the rail grinding to create noise at times. However, the track mounted rail-grinding vehicle will move along a stretch of track typically between 100 to 300m back and forth several times across a 2 – 3 hour shift.

Any specific residence or premises will experience these works at most twice during the programme, once inbound and once outbound. Measures are planned to be in place on the grinding vehicle to reduce noise and light levels and minimise disturbance where possible.

Highways impact

During the hours of work, there will be localised traffic management plans in place at each site location. Due to the relatively short areas of track being worked on at a time, the road impact is likely to be minimal and may include temporary traffic lights where needed. There are no significant road closures or diversions planned.
