Hindley travel hub proposals

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is developing plans for a new travel hub in Hindley.  

We're planning improvements to make travelling to and from Hindley station safer and more convenient, tackling parking pressures in the area, and making it easier for people to connect with onward journeys across Greater Manchester.

The proposals include a larger park and ride, new cycle parking, electric vehicle charging points, improved access between the car park and station, better lighting and CCTV.

Proposed changes at Hindley travel hub

The proposed improvements include:

Expanding the existing park and ride next to Hindley station. Increasing parking capacity from 52 to around 111 spaces, including accessible parking.
Providing six electric vehicle charging bays, including accessible parking spaces.
Creating a dedicated pick-up and drop-off area with a seated waiting shelter.
Adding secure cycle parking for around 10 bikes.
Improving access between the station and car parks with a new accessible ramp linking to Platform 2 and the new lift.
Complementing the accessibility improvements already being delivered at Hindley station, including step-free access, which is expected to be completed in spring 2027.

What this means for you

If you travel by train: A new step-free route between the travel hub and the station, making it easier to access rail services and connect with the wider rail network.
If you drive to the station: An expanded park and ride, providing more parking spaces, including accessible parking spaces and electric vehicle (EV) charging points.
If you walk, wheel or cycle: The plans include new cycle parking and a pedestrian route beneath Ladies Lane bridge, helping to improve access to the station.

What happens next?

The next step will be to submit a planning application to Wigan Council. If approved, detailed design and construction will follow.

Improvements at Hindley railway station

Work is already underway on separate accessibility improvements at Hindley station, delivered through a £6.5 million investment.

The station upgrade includes:

Two new passenger lifts
A new footbridge
Improved lighting
Upgraded CCTV around the lifts and assistance areas

Work is expected to finish by spring 2027.

Why are improvements being proposed at Hindley travel hub?

The travel hub aims to address a historic lack of parking facilities in the area surrounding of Hindley station due to the current Park & Ride regularly exceeding capacity.

The plans include a new accessible pedestrian ramp linking the travel hub and station. They also support separate accessibility improvements at the station, including new lifts, a footbridge and step-free access to both platforms.

How will the proposals benefit people who walk, wheel or cycle?

The proposals include new cycle parking and improved pedestrian links between the station and surrounding areas, including a route beneath Ladies Lane bridge.
