Greek Street railway bridge replacement

Until Spring 2026

Greek Street roundabout in Edgeley, Stockport is located on a bridge that runs over the railway.

From 31 March this year [2025], until Spring 2026, Network Rail will be carrying out work to install a new railway bridge and roundabout. Timescales of the phased work are summarised below:

The next rail works are scheduled to take place on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 October 2025, with no trains operating through Stockport.
Further works are also planned for Christmas 2025.

Following the installation of the new rail bridge in August, the next works will take place on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 October 2025.

On both days, no trains will operate from, to or via Stockport rail station. Replacement buses will operate on various routes, with train tickets and passes accepted on the following Bee Network bus services: 11, 42C, 192, 368, 370, 371 & 378.

Tickets and passes will also be accepted on Metrolink services between Altrincham/Navigation Road and Manchester city centre.

Later in the year, further works will take place over Christmas, from 25-27 December.

We're advising customers to check before they travel by checking for planned disruption updates on the National Rail website.

Bus diversions

For the duration of the works, the below bus services will be on diversion.

Bus timetables

Due to the length of the works, new timetables have been created for the below bus services.

From Monday 31 March, you will be able to view the new timetable on the specific bus service pages by selecting 'View timetable':

11, 309, 310, 312, 313, 368 and 374

From 31 March 2025 until Spring 2026, the Greek Street roundabout and part of the nearby roads will close for the works.

Vehicular and pedestrian/cycle diversion route maps are available on the Network Rail webpage.

During the closure, we have identified a number of roads around the area where drivers may experience increased congestion. To see which roads are affected, view our map.

Where possible, please allow more time for your journey.

Built in 1958, the existing railway bridge has now reached the end of its life span and is in need of renewal.

Located on the West Coast Mainline, the bridge runs over a vital railway link, with over 400 passenger trains and 50 freight services passing under the bridge every day. By replacing the structure, rail services can continue to run reliably for years to come.

To minimise disruption, preliminary works to divert utilities has already took place over the 2024 Christmas period, with further works taking place over the Easter bank holiday prior to the full line closure in August 2025.

For local residents and road & bus users, Network Rail is working closely with Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council and Transport for Greater Manchester to make sure alternative travel options and diversionary routes are clearly planned and communicated.
