Transpennine Route Upgrade

Network Rail will carry out a major programme of railway improvement works will take place to bring better journeys to passengers travelling across the Pennines between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York.

This includes a full remodelling of Huddersfield Rail Station with the station closing from Saturday 30 August to Sunday 28 September.

As a result, trains will not call at seven stations (Lockwood, Deighton, Huddersfield, Slaithwaite, Marsden, Greenfield, Mossley). A replacement bus service will be in operation.

During the 30-day closure of Huddersfield Train Station, no trains will run between Berry Brow/Stalybridge and Heaton Lodge Junction (between Deighton and Mirfield).

On some days, trains will not run between Penistone and Huddersfield. Train services will also be impacted on the wider route between Huddersfield, Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds and York.

Trains will not call at seven stations (Lockwood, Deighton, Huddersfield, Slaithwaite, Marsden, Greenfield, Mossley). On some days, trains will not call at a further six stations on the Penistone Line (Berry Brow, Honley, Brockholes, Stocksmoor, Shepley, Denby Dale).

A rail replacement bus will be in operation.

Customers are advised to check their journeys on the National Rail website before they travel.

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a major, multi-billion-pound programme of railway improvements and are working to transform journeys across the North, better connecting towns and cities, through more frequent, faster trains, running on a cleaner, greener and more reliable railway.

In Huddersfield, Network Rail are completing a full remodelling of the station which includes:

Installing additional track and reconstructing the platforms to enable more trains to run on a greener, more reliable railway.
Extending the platforms to facilitate longer trains, meaning more space and more seats for customers.
Improved accessibility with increased tactile wayfinding and a new pedestrian footbridge and lifts.
The sympathetic restoration of the historic ‘Euston-style’ roof canopy, including painting work and the installation of the original train shed canopy lantern feature.
Dismantling and relocating the Grade II listed tearoom to a new location on its current platform to provide an improved space for passengers while they wait for services.
Installing new toilet facilities.
Installing an improved customer information system including train departure and customer information screens.
Completing strengthening work to Huddersfield viaduct to accommodate the new lines of track.
Relocating the current sidings at Huddersfield station to a new, purpose-built, light maintenance depot at Hillhouse to enhance railway operations and capacity.

Once TRU is complete, Huddersfield station will act as a better gateway for the local community and support social and economic regeneration through the development of a more efficient railway, connecting homes, workplaces and key destinations across the North.
