Deansgate-Castlefield and Trafford Bar - Tram Improvement Works

We're carrying out major Metrolink improvement works at Trafford Bar, Cornbrook, Eccles and Deansgate-Castlefield as part of our £150 million investment to future proof the network.

This programme began with major renewal works in July and continues with a second phase in October where 4000 metres of track will be replaced.

This section of the network is one of the busiest light rail corridors in Europe, with a tram passing through every 30 seconds. The scale and complexity of the work means it cannot be completed during a single closure. By delivering it in phases, we can renew significant sections of track, improve drainage, replace key infrastructure and carry out other essential upgrades while avoiding an even longer shutdown of the network. During the October closure, we're also taking the opportunity to carry out additional work across the network.

Customers are already seeing some of the benefits from the work completed so far, including the removal of speed restrictions and improved reliability on renewed sections of track. Once the programme is complete, even more speed restrictions will be lifted, helping deliver quicker and more reliable journeys.

We know these works are disruptive and we are sorry for the impact on journeys. We've used feedback from previous closures to help shape our plans this time around, with a range of alternative travel options available throughout the works.

Customers are encouraged to plan ahead and check the Bee Network website or app before travelling.

Thank you for your patience while we continue investing in a safer, more reliable Metrolink network for Greater Manchester.
