Deansgate-Castlefield and Trafford Bar - Tram Improvement Works

Essential upgrades this July to keep Metrolink moving

This month, we're carrying out major improvement works across Metrolink as part of a £150 million investment to renew and upgrade the network.

The next phase of works will take place between Monday 13 July and Sunday 2 August, when parts of the network will close to allow engineers to carry out essential upgrades.

During this time:

  • No trams will run on the Eccles, Trafford Centre and Altrincham lines
  • East Didsbury and Manchester Airport services will run to Firswood only
  • Rochdale line services will terminate at Exchange Square
-Replacement bus services will operate between affected stops. Passengers using these services will need a tram ticket or to tap in/out at the tram stop to register their journey
  • There will be a special event bus service running for the cricket at Old Trafford on 26 and 31 July

There will also be a one-day closure of the Rochdale line on Sunday 12 July for follow-up works at Newton Heath.

Trams will resume as normal from start of service on Monday 3 August.

Why this work is necessary:

  • The work at Trafford Bar and Deansgate-Castlefield is highly complex and one of the busiest stretches of tram track in the country.
  • Some sections are more than 30 years old, with 40-tonne trams running every 30 seconds at peak times - that level wear and tear takes its toll, which is why this work is so important
  • 70 engineers are needed to replace over 3,000 tonnes of new rail and 800 new concrete sleepers
  • It's part of a £150m investment through to 2027 to maintain and improve the Metrolink network
  • Works are designed to improve reliability, maintain safety and strengthen network resilience

We know these closures will be disruptive and we're genuinely sorry for the impact they may have on journeys.

Please keep up to date, and plan ahead, using the Bee Network App and website.

Thank you for your patience while we carry out this essential work to keep Metrolink safe, reliable and fit for the future.
