Greater Manchester has a comprehensive network of rail services provided by private operators and run on the national rail network owned and managed by Network Rail.
If you are planning on travelling by train this week, please ensure you plan your journey in advance.
The ASLEF Union have announced strike action across 16 train operating companies on Saturday 30 September and Wednesday 4 October.
The union have also announced an overtime ban for drivers across the rail network on Friday 29 September and from Monday 2 to Friday 6 October.
As a result, services may be delayed or cancelled. Passengers are strongly advised to check with the operator before travel, both in advance and immediately before departure.

Services between Leeds – Manchester will continue to operate via Calder Valley to Manchester Victoria on weekends. Rail replacement for Manchester Piccadilly – Mossley - Greenfield – Huddersfield stations.

Works will take place throughout summer 2023 affecting Bolton/Atherton lines between Manchester – Wigan.
Hindley station has now reopened to train services but further works at Ince will see the station close in late summer.
The road bridge at Hindley remains closed to vehicles until September but pedestrian access is unaffected.
Between Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 September
- Avanti will run a reduced service to/from London Euston, one train per hour via Crewe and via Stoke-on-Trent. Please check the Avanti website for more details.
- CrossCountry services will be diverted and will not be calling at Coventry or Birmingham International. A replacement bus will be in operation.
- Transport for Wales will run a reduced service between Cardiff Central – Shrewsbury. Journey times between Cardiff Central – Crewe will be extended. Cardiff Central – Holyhead will run between Shrewsbury – Holyhead.
Sunday 24 September
- Northern services between Southport – Stalybridge will start/terminate at Victoria.
- Early morning Northern services between Sheffield – Piccadilly will run on an amended schedule.
- Northern services between Piccadilly – Hadfield will be replaced by bus and will not be calling at Hattersley or Broad Bottom. A shuttle service will be in operation between Gadley – Hadfield.
- A bus replacement will operate between Wigan Wallgate and Southport.
- Northern services between Blackpool North – Airport will start/terminate at Oxford Road and will not be calling at Airport. Services between Liverpool – Airport will start/terminate at Victoria and will not be calling at Airport. A bus replacement will be in operation.
- Transport for Wales services between Chester – Piccadilly will start/terminate at Oxford Road.
Late evening works with replacement bus in operation on several Greater Manchester routes, including Blackburn, Blackpool, Liverpool, Preston, Southport and Wilmslow.
