Following a consultation, Stockport Council will begin work to enhance walking and cycling connectivity, ease congestion at key locations and unlock growth potential along the A34 corridor between the M60 and A555.
The project will see improved walk, wheel and cycle routes with segregated facilities and safer crossings connecting to the wider and expanding Bee Network.
The project also includes a series of junction layout changes to improve traffic flows.
Work will take place between 2024 and 2028. The works are being delivered in
phases planned and co-ordinated to manage disruption as much as possible.
Gatley Road, Wilmslow Road and Broadway works
The first phases of works around Gatley Road, Wilmslow Road and Broadway will take place from April 2024.
Works at Gatley Road, along Wensley Road and Milton Crescent are now underway and will last for 4-5 months.
Works at the Wilmslow Road / Broadway junction will follow gas works, which are not part of this project, and will commence in mid-April for 3-4 months.
The works will predominantly take place during the daytime, Monday-Friday, with evening and weekend working only if required.
TfGM and Stockport Council will be working hard to keep traffic moving during the works, but traffic management is required to ensure the works can be carried out safely and efficiently. This includes the use of temporary traffic lights on Gatley Road and at Wilmslow Road / Broadway. These will not be used at the same time and their use will be restricted to off-peak periods. The lights will only be used when required, and their impact will be closely monitored.
Short periods of road closures will be required within the Wensley Road and Milton Crescent / High Grove Road areas. Diversions will be clearly signed
These works will deliver:
-
A new traffic signal-controlled crossing for pedestrians and cyclists on Gatley Road (between Wensley Road and Milton Crescent), with cycle track connections to these side roads. Onward cycling will be in the carriageway.
-
Traffic calming along Wensley Road, Milton Crescent and High Grove Road, including flat-top humps at junctions. Also the introduction of a 20mph speed limit on the Wensley Road estate. This will make these residential roads safer and more attractive for walking, wheeling and cycling – in particular as a north-south route along the A34 corridor.
-
Traffic signals at the Wilmslow Road / Broadway junction to introduce controlled crossing facilities across both roads, and make exiting Broadway easier for vehicles.
-
Traffic calming along Broadway to complement the existing 20mph speed limit, including flat-top humps at junctions. This is to make walking, wheeling and cycling safer and more attractive, and in particular enhance east-west connectivity between Gatley and Cheadle (and beyond) – cycling will be in the carriageway.
The main roads will be open at all times and access will be maintained to all properties.
