The iconic Great Manchester Run returns to the city’s streets on Sunday 21 May with the half marathon and 10K events.
To ensure you have the best experience, we’ve laid out some helpful travel advice to ensure you and your supporters are prepared for the all-important race day.
Key advice
- There will be a significant number of road closures and extensive bus diversions. Anyone making a journey by road should check the map below of the route and road closures before travel. Passengers travelling by bus should also check with their operator to see whether routes or times may be impacted.
- Metrolink will be the best choice for travel on race day. There are many stops located close to spectating points along the race route - more information in the 'Spectating' section.
- Manchester City play Chelsea on the same day, and because the half marathon route includes roads around the Etihad, we are asking fans travelling to the match to travel by tram to avoid road closures and congestion.
Road closures
With a 10K and a half marathon route, the event requires a significant number of road closures. We strongly advise people travelling within the impacted areas to not drive on Sunday, as the closures are likely to cause congestion and delays to your journey.
To see if your route is impacted by road closures, you can take a look at the full list of road closures.
Getting there by car
Due to the road closures, we are strongly advising people travelling within the impacted areas to not drive on Sunday, as the closures are likely to cause congestion and delays.
If you have to drive, avoid the road closures and do your bit for city centre congestion by leaving your car at a park and ride site for free and hop on the tram.
Our top tip is to park at Parkway, but there's a total of 24 park and ride sites to choose from, depending on which direction you are coming from.
Find the park and ride site that is right for you on our dedicated webpage
A number of bus services will be diverted throughout the day as a result of the road closures in place for the event. You can take a look at our bus diversions guide, to give you a hand in your journey planning, we've summarised some key points below:
- Services using Parker Street will be severely affected due to the closure of Portland Street from Oxford Street to New York Street. The diversions guide has full details of the diversion route for both directions and alternative stops.
- Road closures to support the event will be implemented and later removed in several phases. This means that some bus routes will be returned to their usual route earlier than others.
- Other than the city centre impact, there will be disruption across the bus network, specifically around the Etihad and Old Trafford stadiums.
- Liverpool Road and Tonman Street will also be closed on Saturday 25 May.
Make sure that you check with your operator before travelling. If you are travelling on a Bee Network service, you can use the Bee Network app for bus tracking and live departures.

If you're taking the train to this year’s Great Manchester Run, we recommend travelling to Manchester Oxford Road or Manchester Piccadilly stations.
Manchester Oxford Road train station is the closest to the start line on Portland Street (10-minute walk). From Piccadilly, you can walk or connect with Metrolink trams to take you to the start line.
The start line for both the 10K and the half marathon is on Portland Street. You'll get lots of hints and tips as a registered runner, but if you need pointing in the right direction, you can take a look at the nearest tram and train stations listed below.
Tram
- Piccadilly Gardens - 5-minute walk
- [Piccadilly] - less than a 10-minute walk
- St Peter's Square - less than a 10-minute walk
Train
- Manchester Oxford Road - less than a 10-minute walk
- Manchester Piccadilly - less than a 10-minute walk
Please be aware that all walks between stops and the start line are approximate.
Providing a loved one with that all important encouragement? Why not hop from stop to stop on the tram. This means that you can see your runner start, and hop on the tram to greet them either along the route or at the finish line.
